How to Clean Sex Toys Safely: A Complete Guide

Keeping your toys clean is the single most important thing you can do for your comfort and health. It is also very simple once you know the routine. This guide explains how to clean intimate toys safely, how the material changes what you should do, and how to dry and store them properly. It is general advice: always follow the maker’s instructions for your specific product.

The quick version

  1. Wash the toy before and after every use.
  2. Use warm water and mild, unscented soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner.
  3. Rinse well and dry fully with a clean towel or let it air-dry.
  4. Store it clean and dry in its own pouch, away from other toys.

Why cleaning matters

Bacteria and residue can build up on any toy, and reusing a dirty toy can irritate the skin and increase the risk of infection. Cleaning after use also keeps the surface fresh, helps toys last longer and prevents unpleasant smells. Cleaning before use removes dust and anything picked up in storage.

First, check the material and the controls

How you clean a toy depends on what it is made from and whether it contains electronics.

  • Silicone is smooth and non-porous, so it is the easiest to clean. Warm water and mild soap are usually enough. Many vibrators and dildos are made from it, but always check the description of the individual product.
  • Jelly, TPE and other soft materials are often more porous. They can hold on to bacteria and absorb oils, and some cannot be sterilised. Clean them gently with mild soap and water, dry them completely, and consider using a condom for extra protection.
  • Hard plastic (ABS), glass and metal are generally easy to wash with soap and warm water.
  • Electronic toys need extra care. Check whether the toy is waterproof or only splash-resistant before putting it in water.

If you are not sure what a toy is made from, treat it as the more delicate type and clean it gently. Our guide to choosing the right size and our guide for couples include more tips on picking suitable products.

How to clean a toy step by step

1. Prepare

Turn the toy off. If it is rechargeable, unplug it from the charger. Remove any removable parts, such as batteries or bullets, where the maker allows this.

2. Wash

Use warm (not hot) water and a small amount of mild, unscented soap. Wash all surfaces, including grooves, ridges and the base. Use your hands or a soft cloth rather than anything abrasive.

3. Rinse

Rinse thoroughly until no soap is left. Soap residue can irritate sensitive skin.

4. Dry

Pat the toy dry with a clean towel or paper towel, or leave it to air-dry on a clean surface. Make sure it is fully dry before storing it, because moisture encourages bacteria.

5. Store

Keep each toy in its own breathable pouch, in a cool, dry place, away from heat and sunlight.

Waterproof, splash-proof and not waterproof

  • Waterproof toys can be washed under running water. Check the product description for the exact rating.
  • Splash-resistant toys should not be submerged. Wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap, then rinse the cloth and wipe again.
  • Not waterproof: wipe with a damp, soapy cloth and take care that no water reaches the controls, the charging port or the battery compartment.

Never put a toy in a dishwasher, microwave or washing machine unless the manufacturer explicitly says it is safe.

Toy cleaners, wipes and disinfectants

A dedicated toy cleaner is a convenient option, especially while travelling, but plain soap and water is perfectly adequate for most toys. Avoid harsh household products such as bleach, strong detergents and products containing alcohol or fragrance unless the maker says they are safe for your toy, as they can damage some materials and irritate your skin.

Lubricant matters too

The wrong lubricant can damage a toy. Water-based lubricant is generally safe for most materials, including silicone. Silicone-based lubricant can break down the surface of silicone toys over time, so do not use it with them. If you are unsure, check the packaging or the maker’s instructions.

Sharing toys and switching between uses

  • If a toy is shared between partners, clean it between uses, or cover it with a fresh condom each time.
  • Do not move a toy from anal to vaginal use without washing it thoroughly or changing the condom. Our anal toys should always have a flared base for safety, see our beginner’s guide to butt plugs.
  • Do not share toys with people outside your own relationship.

Looking after rechargeable toys

  • Charge fully before the first use and follow the maker’s charging instructions.
  • Make sure the charging port and the toy are dry before you charge.
  • Do not leave a toy charging for days.
  • If the toy stops working or looks damaged, stop using it.

Storage tips

  • Keep toys of different materials apart. Some materials can react with each other and become sticky or damaged.
  • Use the pouch that came with the toy, or a clean cotton bag.
  • Avoid plastic bags that trap moisture.
  • Store them somewhere private, cool and dry.

When to stop using a toy

Replace a toy if it becomes sticky, cracked, torn, discoloured or smelly even after cleaning, or if it irritates your skin. If you notice soreness, itching or unusual discharge after using a toy, stop and speak to your doctor or a sexual health clinic.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my toys?

Before and after every use. If a toy has been stored for a while, clean it before using it too.

Can I use baby wipes?

It is better not to, because wipes often contain fragrance and other ingredients that can irritate the skin or damage some materials. Use mild soap and water or a toy cleaner.

Can I boil silicone toys?

Some solid silicone toys can be boiled, but many toys contain electronics, and others are made of different materials. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions first. Never boil a toy that contains a motor or battery.

What if I am not sure what material it is?

Treat it as delicate. Clean it with mild soap and warm water, dry it carefully, and use a condom. Read the product page for details about its material.

Do I need to clean a new toy?

Yes. Wash it before the first use to remove dust from manufacturing and packaging.
