Water-Based vs Silicone Lubricant: Which Should You Choose?
Lubricant makes almost everything more comfortable, but the wrong one can damage your toys or irritate your skin. The two most common types are water-based and silicone-based, and they behave very differently. This guide explains the difference, which one suits which toy, and how to choose with confidence. It is general information. Always check the label of both your lubricant and your toy.
The short answer
- Water-based lubricant is the safe, all-round choice. It works with most toy materials, including silicone, and with condoms.
- Silicone-based lubricant lasts longer and is very slippery, but it can damage the surface of silicone toys. Use it with toys made from other materials only if the maker says it is safe.
If you only buy one, buy water-based.
Water-based lubricant
Advantages
- Compatible with most toys, including silicone, and with latex condoms.
- Washes off easily with water and does not stain sheets as much.
- Widely available and usually cheaper.
Disadvantages
- It can dry out or become sticky, so you may need to reapply.
- Some formulas contain glycerin, parabens or fragrance, which can irritate sensitive skin. Look for simple, fragrance-free ones.
Silicone-based lubricant
Advantages
- Long-lasting and very smooth, so it is often chosen for longer sessions.
- Does not dry out quickly, and some types can be used in water.
Disadvantages
- Can damage silicone toys. It can make the surface soft, sticky or rough over time. Do not use it with silicone toys unless the maker specifically says it is fine.
- Harder to wash off, and it can leave marks on fabrics.
- Usually more expensive.
What about oil-based lubricants?
Oils such as baby oil, coconut oil or massage oil should not be used with latex condoms, because they can weaken the latex. They can also be difficult to clean from some toys and can leave residue. Unless a product is designed for the purpose and the label says so, it is safer to avoid them.
Which lubricant for which toy?
Because toys are made from different materials, always check the product page and the maker’s advice.
- Silicone toys: use water-based lubricant. Many of our vibrators and dildos are made from silicone, but check the description of the individual product.
- Jelly, TPE and soft porous materials: water-based lubricant is usually the safest choice. Avoid silicone-based and oil-based types unless the maker says they are safe.
- Glass, metal and hard plastic: usually compatible with any lubricant, but follow the manufacturer’s advice.
If you are unsure of the material, use water-based lubricant and test a small amount on a hidden spot first.
Lubricant and condoms
Water-based and silicone-based lubricants are generally compatible with latex condoms. Oil-based products are not. Check the lubricant label if you are using condoms for protection or to cover a toy.
How to choose a good lubricant
- Read the ingredients. Simple formulas with few additives are usually gentler.
- Go fragrance-free if you have sensitive skin.
- Check it is body-safe and made for intimate use.
- Test a small amount on your inner arm first if you have allergies or sensitive skin.
- Look at the bottle. A pump is easier than a flip-top when your hands are slippery.
How much should you use?
More than you think. Start with a generous amount and reapply when needed. There is no such thing as too much, and it makes everything more comfortable. It also matters for comfort when you are trying something new, for example in our guides for couples and for beginners with butt plugs.
Cleaning up
Wash toys after each use with warm water and mild soap. Silicone-based lubricant can need a bit more washing than water-based. Our full guide to cleaning sex toys explains the routine, drying and storage in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use water-based lubricant with all toys?
It is the safest choice for most toys, but always check the toy’s instructions.
Will silicone lubricant really damage a silicone toy?
It can. Over time, it can break down the surface, leaving it sticky or rough. Use water-based lubricant instead.
Can I use saliva?
It dries quickly and does not protect well against friction. A proper lubricant is more comfortable.
How long does lubricant last once opened?
Most last a year or two. Check the label, and throw it away if it smells or looks different.
Is lubricant only for toys?
No. Many people use it with a partner, with or without toys, to make things more comfortable.
